Milwaukee Astronomical Society
The Milwaukee Astronomical Society (MAS), a 95-year-old astronomy organization located in New Berlin, WI, has been responsible for many of the opportunities I've had in astronomy – e.g., my introduction to astrophotography, acceptance to Harvard, and my first research position. I joined the MAS during the pandemic, and immediately became enamored with its world-class observatory (pictured). I eventually became a keyholder and board member. I am now serving in my second three-year board term, and I am also the MAS Program Committee Chair. As Chair, I direct organization of our open houses, monthly public talks, observing events, and conferences. To learn more about the MAS and our upcoming public events, please visit our website.
Harvard Summit for Young Leaders in China
I have been a teacher at Harvard's annual "Summit for Young Leaders in China" (HSYLC) conferences since 2024. HSYLC is a conference that brings top high school students from around China to experience Harvard's liberal arts education firsthand. As an instructor at HSYLC Beijing 2024 and Shenzhen 2025, I had the opportunity to teach rigorous, astronomy-focused courses to top students while engaging with young people in different cultural contexts.
At HSYLC Beijing 2024, I taught several dozen students a course called "Seeing Ourselves in the Cosmos: The Symbiotic Relationship Between Astronomy and Culture," which taught the history of astronomy through the lens of anthropology. If you want to learn more about the course, check out the course syllabus.
At HSYLC Shenzhen 2025, I taught "Unpacking the Universe: An Introduction to Science Communication." My course – modeled after a joint English-Physics science writing course at Harvard – introduced popular and academic science writing, as well as intriguing concepts in physics. For their class projects, students learned how to write scientific abstracts, magazine articles, and derive physics principles on a chalkboard.
Harvard College Observatory
I am the telescope manager and an outreach assistant at the Harvard College Observatory (HCO), where I help director Philippe Reekie run the HCO's many public events. As telescope manager, I lead operations of the HCO's century-old 10" Clark Telescope, as well as several computerized telescopes, during public events. On top of the HCO's monthly "Public Observing Night" events, we have run events with the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), SPARK Boston, Winthrop House, Burlington High School, Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and Cambridge Explores the Universe. Our Public Observing Nights and other public events reach thousands of people in the Boston-Cambridge area each year. To learn more about the HCO's outreach activities, please visit our website.
